what’s a hemroid

Hemorrhoids are a matter of too much pressure on the anal veins and the anal plexus. Pressure can come from things you can do something about, like lack of exercise, a constipating diet and straining at stool. Pressure can also come from things you cannot do anything about, like a fundamental lack of valves in the anal veins or liver ascites. Anything that increases the blood pressure in the anal plexus can (and usually does) lead to hemorrhoids. There are internal and external hemorrhoids and many people who have one kind of hemorrhoid also have the other (see What a hemroid is and how to get rid of it)

Anything that increases the pressure of the rectal vasculature—the veins in particular—can result in hemorrhoids. How all this works is not entirely clear, but doctors have found that a lack of exercise triggers hemorrhoids. Also, constipation or diarrhea (a change in bowel habits) can cause irritation of the veins around the anus. (see What causes hemorrhoids)

The surgeon should enquire about the adequate intake of water and fiber in the diet. Lack of fiber in the diet is perhaps the most common predisposing factor in the development of hemorrhoids. The intake of constipating foods such as cheese and milk should be ascertained. On the other hand, diarrhea may be caused by beer, citrus fruits, lactose intolerance, and caffeine, once again aggravating the symptoms of hemorrhoids. Treatment of hemorrhoids without correcting these single factors is doomed to fail.

Excessive straining will predispose to hemorrhoids. Some individuals habitually strain for a bowel movement. Such constant pressure causes engorgement and stretching of the vascular anal cushions. Ultimately the supporting connective tissue holding the vascular cushions is stretched and broken, and the vascular cushions slide downward, presenting as hemorrhoids.

How to cure constipation

Some patients with chronic constipation suffer from hemorrhoid problems. It is not clear if illness causes hemorrhoids but constipation and straining can certainly aggravate hemorrhoids. The combination of constipation and “hemorrhoids” should always raise the possibility of a low-lying rectal cancer.

On the other hand, patients with chronic diarrhea also develop hemorrhoids. Tenesmus from diarrhea does cause straining, and the constant irritation from loose stools will also damage the delicate hemorrhoidal veins. The best way to deal with hemorrhoids is to avoid constipation. To prevent hemorrhoids or to ease their discomfort, try the following tips (see Home remedies for hemorrhoids)

  • Eat a fiber-rich diet, including fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains.

  • There are foods you should avoid if you have hemorrhoids. These are things that can cause constipation or that make you strain when you have a bowel movement and include little fiber sweets, cheese, meat, fizzy drinks, alcohol, and coffee.
  • Try to avoid spicy foods, pastries, and pasta made with white flour, white bread, and processed foods with much sodium in them.
  • Avoid cakes, cookies, breakfast cereals containing sugar and foods that are high in fat.
  • Caffeine is a stimulant laxative which is not the way you want to have your bowel movements.
  • Alcohol dehydrates the body and makes stool harder.
  • Foods like nuts, mustard, and red pepper will contribute to having bleeding hemorrhoids. They also pass through the colon partially digested which aggravates hemorrhoids.

  • Pay attention to the foods you should eat when you have hemorrhoids and avoid the foods you should not eat. Try to make up recipes that incorporate your need for hemorrhoid-healthy foods and keep a list of them so, when you go to the store.
